BALI RANGDA MASK; This is a great traditional drama mask in the shape of a Demon. Hand carved and hand painting, I collected in Bali during the late 1990’s. ~~~ RANGDA ;She is the personification of Durga, wife of Shiva, the Queen of Witches and Goddess of Death. The Temple of the Dead in every village in Bali is dedicated to Rangda.. Durga is an extension of the destructive aspect of Shiva. Shiva and Durga together represent death and decay and the germination of life. When the Balinese give offerings to Rangda, they are not worshipping evil but are recognizing the balance between life and death in the form of Shiva. Rangda means "widow " and in Bali today, people believe that a woman that has been widowed three times has accumulated enough power to perform black magic. . Rangda is well known for her important roles in the Calonarang and Barong dance dramas in Bali.~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ In Bali we find many different types of masks with cultural significance symbolizing people, deities, demons and often unique characters. The masks are very important in passing down oral history from generation to generation and are used in mythical dance plays. They are regarded as sacred objects. It is believed that while performing, the player who wears the mask is possessed by the spirit of the character portrayed on it. The content of the Balinese dramas is derived from popular myth, historical events, and local needs (e.g. to ward off particular evil spirits and bring good fortune) Worldwide in drama and dance, masks are worn to enhance the story and to clarify the emotions being expressed.
